Earlier this year, Dr. Pedersen completed her doctoral program in Criminal Justice. For her dissertation, she focused on juvenile incarceration issues. Her dissertation can be found as follows: Diversion of Youth in the Criminal Justice System: A General Qualitative Inquiry.

Dr. Pedersen's research is an exploration of the present restorative justice programs and practices as viewed through the lens of juvenile probation officers. Through interviews with probation officers, Dr. Pedersen found that success often depends on four factors: family and youth buy-in, available resources, meeting basic needs like housing and transportation, and building trust with families who may distrust the justice system.

The dissertation shows how shifting from punishment to rehabilitation can reduce reoffending and give young people a better path forward. This reflects the same compassion, commitment, and passion Dr. Pedersen brings to her practice.
